Update: Wiht a 73-12 vote, House lawmakers advanced Hosue Bill 1199.
Background: House Bill 1199 would formalize an interagency task force to fill the communications gap between federal, state, tribal, and local justice officials in regards to missing and murdered Indigenous people.
Our position: The ACLU of North Dakota supports House Bill 1199.
It’s impossible to overstate the harms the MMIP epidemic has had – and continues to have – on the lives of Native people across North Dakota and across the country. For years, Indigenous communities have mourned the deaths and disappearances of far too many family and community members with no justice in sight. No family or community is immune to the pain caused by this tragic epidemic.
