Update: The House Judiciary Committee gave House Bill 1535 a "Do Pass" recommendation and referred the bill to the Appropriations Committee.
Background: House Bill 1535 would create a “Feather Alert” notice system similar to the federal “Amber Alert” emergency missing persons broadcast program but tailored to the needs of North Dakota’s five tribal nations.
Our position: The ACLU of North Dakota supports House Bill 1535. The “Feather Alert” system would provide public information to help find missing Indigenous people quickly while coordinating law enforcement agencies, including tribal, local, state, and federal agencies.
