Help ensure a fair and equitable redistricting process in North Dakota with our social toolkit!
Redistricting is the process of redrawing electoral district boundaries. It is based on the idea of “one person, one vote” and is meant to ensure that every person has fair representation at the local, state, and federal levels. It happens every 10 years in conjunction with new population data from the U.S. Census Bureau.
Now that the Census Bureau has released its 2020 redistricting data in its legacy format, legislators have begun analyzing real population data to draw new district lines.
WHY DOES THIS MATTER?
Using the data from the Census to draw the lines of electoral districts for government representation, redistricting plays a vital role in our communities and affects our daily lives. How district lines are drawn influences who runs for public office which influences who is elected to powerful political positions. Our elected officials make decisions about every aspect of our communities, from ensuring safe schools to adopting inclusive immigration policies, and more.
WHAT ARE WE DOING ABOUT IT?
The ACLU is engaged in redistricting efforts with nonpartisan coalitions across the state of North Dakota. We will monitor the state legislature to ensure it heeds the fundamental principles of democracy, representation, and equality.
